Are you a dried-fish woman?

Its funny to know that in Japan they have a term for the old maid as Dried-fish woman [himono onna - 干物女]. It means an single lady, normally in her late 29s to 30s or older, who has given up on love and sex, and is content to live alone. A himono onna considers romantic stuff as too meddlesome, or mendokusai . Actually, mendokusai is her primary reason for everything.
  • She's stopped trying to impress the opposite sex, doesn't bother dressing attractively and goes around in the most comfortable clothes possible, including going sans bra or no-bura.
  • She may also stop paying too much attention to things like personal hygiene, or at least stop bothering with makeup, going more than once or twice a year to the hairdresser, doing her nails, and things like that, except when she goes to work.
  • Anticipating the possibility that she will have no children to take care of her in her old age, she may be saving up a lot of her money, buying her own apartment or house (until recently it was practically unheard of for a single woman to buy her own place) - or she may be spending money on herself at will.

In addition, himono onna is an expression used in the movie Hotaru No Hikari to describe the main character, a woman in her 20s who has renounced the pursuit of romance. She spends her evenings reading manga and drinking at home alone, and she spends her weekends lazing around in bed. She’s a dried-fish woman.
